New Jersey Transit Response

December 18, 2007

Dear Friend of Transit:

Thank you for your e-mail to Governor Jon S. Corzine and the NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors regarding the proposed North Brunswick Station and town center.

As New Jersey's statewide public transportation agency we welcome opportunities to connect people with transit. And to that end we support Smart Growth and participate in the New Jersey Department of Trasnportation's Transit Village Program. That is why we join you in supporting the concept of a North Brunswick Transit Village, but have to explore several issues regarding its implementation.

The implementation of a new station in North Brunswick together with a town center development will be a complex undertaking. Its location on the Northeast Corridor Line (NEC) poses significant train operation challenges. It is estimated that the construction of a new station would cost more than $100 million. This project will also require modification to the NEC and road upgrades to address existing congestion and accomodate the increased activity related to the town center and station parking -- costs that would be a substantial addition to the $100 million.

While these challenges exist, we continue to explore various alternatives. Discussions are underway to define a path forward, which could include a phased implementation and potential funding sources. As plans take shape we will share them with the public to seek input and suggestions.

Once again, we look forward to working together to realize plans that connect people with transit and welcome your continued interest and support for projects such as this. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Richard R. Sarles
Executive Director
